What is a Calibration

Calibration is a process by which a measuring instrument is compared against a known reference.

To quantify instrument performance at a series of controlled conditions where stability/equilibrium has been reached.

Calibration gives the user a level confidence in the instrument and the measurements it provides.

A calibration will help identify key instrument characteristics:

  • Errors when compared to a reference,
  • Stability (drift),
  • Repeatability...

The user can assign a "tolerance" to measurement data (uncertainty).
